When to Use Product Carry Handles (And Why)
Here’s a question: why would one bulky, heavy product use product carry handles, while another of the same size and weight might not? After all, wouldn’t a carry handle be just as helpful on both? Well, as it turns out, that’s complicated.
Don’t get us wrong—overwhelmingly, consumers seem to prefer it when a product has a carry handle. So all things being equal, you should seriously consider applying them to your bulkier products to improve consumer satisfaction. But here’s the real question you should ask yourself: when are product carry handles most likely to improve sales?
Today, we’re highlighting when (and why) you should use product carry handles to increase sales.
How Product Carry Handles Can Increase Sales
Before we can explore when to use carry handles, it’s essential to know why they matter. As you can probably guess, the big draw of carry handles for customers is that they make bulky products easier to carry. But while that can be a nice, added benefit for some customers, it can be make-or-break for others.
Younger customers (such as those aged 18-35) tend to do much better at picking up heavy products and getting them home where they need to be. But as customers age, some of them will lose the strength and mobility they had when they were younger. And these customers aren’t just thinking about getting a product in their cart; they’re thinking about getting that product to checkout, putting that product in their car, and hauling it into their home (which can be especially tough during the winter). For customers like this, that can be big enough of a difference to choose a competitor product that has a product carry handle or simply not purchase that product at all. So by adding a product carry handle to your bulky products, customers with mobility and/or strength issues are much more likely to make a purchase.
So Which Products Need Product Carry Handles?
With that in mind, not every product needs a carry handle. Lightweight, easy-to-handle products obviously don’t need much beyond the average hang tab. But what about bulky products? Do they all need carry handles?
Well, that depends.
The best candidates for carry handles are products that sell better with them. Generally speaking, that means non-essential (elastic) products that older customers want, such as:
- Large bags of pet food
- 2 liter bottles of soda pop
- Name brand paper towels and toilet paper
- Paints, garden supplies, and other hobby items
When deciding which products need product carry handles, remember to ask yourself: will a carry handle help someone who’s on the fence about buying this product?
